Energy Saving Tips

Energy and the way we use it, is a huge environmental issue that faces each and every one of us today. On an average most consumers realize the importance of saving energy and what a significant role it can play into our own budget as well as the rest of our community. However, only a few of us actually know of all the things we can do to save our environment and put valuable dollars back into our pocket where they belong.

This page has been dedicated to energy conservation. Below, you will find things that you can do in your own home that will save you money on energy bills and also save the environment we live in. If you have any questions or have any ideas of your own, please let us know. Gardner Electrical welcomes your feedback and we look forward to serving you in the near future!

  1. Most importantly, when shopping for new appliances look for the Energy Star label. This is the symbol for energy efficiency and consumers should be aware of the benefits of purchasing Energy Star labeled products. When purchasing home appliances and products, you can save an average of 30% annually on your energy bills.

  2. Consider having radiant barrier installed in your home. Properly installed radiant barrier foil will block up to 97% of the heat that is radiated from the sun.

  3. Make sure that your home is thoroughly sealed. Insulate, Insulate, Insulate! R-38 should be used in the ceilings and R-19 in the floors. Also, insulate ducts where they run through cold areas.

  4. Be sure to install storm windows and doors or use plastic sheeting, weather strip and caulk!
Also, check for drafts around windows, door frames, foundation cracks, electrical outlets, etc.

  5. Make sure that all of your electrical equipment is in proper working order!

  6. Your heating and cooling system is constantly working for you! Make sure that you maintain it by replacing air filters often and doing regular maintenance checkups.

  7. If you have an extra refrigerator or freezer, consider moving it out to the garage and using it so that it won’t have to work so hard to stay cool.

  8. Live an Energy-Efficient Lifestyle.

    Here are some examples!

       a. Light only the area where you are working not the entire room.
       b. Turn off lights and appliances when they are not being used.
       c. Run full loads in dishwashers and washing machines.
       d. Close the shades at night.
       e. Turning off TVs, VCRs, cable boxes, CD players, cassette decks and computers when not in        use. This will reduce energy costs and also extend the life of the product.
       f. Only use the conventional oven to cook large portions of food. Using a microwave or toaster        oven to cook small portions will save on electricity.
       g. Let the sun light your home. It is actually brighter than light bulbs and it is free!
       h. Putting timers on a few lights in your home, and installing motion detectors on exterior lights        will save energy because these lights will not be continually burning.
       i. Clean and replace your air filters at least once a month. This will help your heating and cooling        system run more efficiently!
       j. Consider replacing all light fixtures and bulbs that operate 4 or more hours a day with ones that        use fluorescent bulbs. They may be initially more expensive but they will save valuable dollars        on electricity.
Seasonal changes also play a vital role to the way we use our energy. An energy conscious consumer can save valuable dollars regardless of the time of the year.

Below we have provided some valuable tips that pertain to seasonal changes. We hope that you will take advantage of these seasonal tips, if you do not already.

  Cold Weather Tips
  • Open window shades that receive direct sunlight during the day. The natural heat of the sun will warm your home for free!
  • Set the thermostat at 68 degrees and lower the setting a few degrees at night, or when the home is unoccupied.
  • Wear layers of clothing and use extra blankets.
  • Keep fireplace chimney dampers closed when you are not using the fireplace. Your warm air will just escape up the chimney and be replaced by the cold air outdoors.
  Hot Weather Tips
  • Leave window shades that receive direct sunlight down during the day. This will prevent the heat of the sun from overheating your home.
  • Try to use the oven, dishwasher and other appliances that produce heat during the late evening and early morning when it is coolest outside.
  • Set the thermostat no lower than 78 degrees and turn it up a few degrees when the house is unoccupied.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes.
  • Keep fireplace chimney dampers closed.
